  12.    I know all you major phone tappers are probably all sitting there going
  13.    "Oooooo! Ahhhhh!" and I know what you're saying... but this is for the
  14.    guys/girls who have some electrical knowledge, but not enough to put some-
  15.    thing together by themselves...(like this, anyway.)

  17.    Here we go.

  19.                                I: THE BEIGE BOX
  20.  
  21.    Also commonly referred to as the "Bud Box". This is extremely simple to
  22. construct, and doesn't take much time.
  23.    First, get about a 12 foot phone cord. Regular. They cost about uh...$2.50
  24. at K-Mart or something.  Second, cut off one of the ends of it. (ie, cut the
  25. little plastic thingy off).  Third, cut some of the plastic stuff off; like
  26. get a razor blade and cut it, but don't cut the wires inside. (Very tricky).
  27. Fourth, when you see the wires inside, there should be a red, a green, a
  28. yellow, and a black. Ignore the yellow and black. In fact, cut them off. Now
  29. strip some of the little red and green plastic off. (Yes, with your razor
  30. blade). Now get out your soldering gun! (Oh, did i forget to mention that?)
  31. Now, get some solder and some alligator clips. (Available at Radio Shack for
  32. about $1.10 for 10 of them). Now solder the green wire to one clip, and the
  33. red to another.
  34.     Simple? You've finished your first phone 'tap'. Now, grab your fone, (ie,
  35. the receiver), and head outside.
  36.     In your backyard, there should be a silver box with "BELL" written on it.
  37. They're not that hard to find, usually, you can just look up at the telephone
  38. poll and there are wires leading down. Anyway--pop off the little box. If it
  39. doesn't budge, go grab a screwdriver. Now unscrew the big screw at the bottom
  40. of the box. NOW pop it off.  There should be screws and wires that look some-
  41. thing like this:

  49. Or something along those lines.  The little asteriks are screws. Usually,
  50. (at least around my neighborhood), the green alligator clip goes to the green
  51. screw, and the red to the red. It could be different, however, so switch them
  52. around if needed. I don't think the bottom screws are ever needed, unless the
  53. house has another separate fone line. And be careful! I got shocked once, and
  54. it wasn't very phun..

  56.    Alright, so that's basic, and it's very easy to get caught with, so don't
  57. try it unless your neighbors aren't going to be home for a long time, or are
  58. on vacation.  A neato nifty thing to do is to stick an automatic recorder in
  59. their little box. (When i say 'their', I am referring to your victim's).
  60. They're available at Radio Shack for $19. Pretty steep unless you're a rich
  61. kid, which i'm not, but that's another story. So, you rip one off. (Haha,
  62. joke... I do NOT condone stealing things). Ok, so anyway, you buy one from
  63. Radio Shack for $19, use it until you don't need it anymore (up to 30 days,
  64. usually), and then take it back... if it's in good condition. Anyway (for
  65. the 4th time), you get a microcassette recorder (you can buy mine!) and
  66. stick your little contraption in the silver Bell box. Then the recording
  67. will start when they pick up the fone, and stop automatically when they're
  68. done.  Just make sure your neighbors don't check their Bell box often.
  69. (And *REMEMBER*, the fine for evesdropping is 5 years and $10,000.. the
  70. CHOICE is YOURS... hehehehe).

  72.                         II: WIRELESS TRANSMITTER PLANS
  73.  
  74.    This is a transmitter that consists on a one colpitts oscillator that
  75. takes its power from the fone line.  Since the resistance it puts on the
  76. line is less that 100 ohms, it has no effect on the telephone performance,
  77. and can't be detected by your neighbors or Ma Bell.  Since it's a low-powered
  78. device that doesn't use an antenna for radiation, it is legal to the FCC...
  79. BUT--Not legal for what we're going to do with it!
  80.    What it does, is use four diodes to form a bridge rectifier. It produces
  81. a varying DC voltage varying with the auto-signals on the line. That voltage
  82. is used to supply the voltage for the oscillator transistor. Which is
  83. connected to a radio circuit. From there, you can tune it to any channel you
  84. want. The rest will be explained inn text.

  101.    L1 may be constructed by winding approx. 40 turns of No. 36 enamel wire
  102. on a mega-ohm, 1/2 watt resistor.  The value of L1 is not critical.  L2 can be
  103. made by wrapping 5 turns of No. 20 wire around a 1/4 inch form. After the wire
  104. is wrapped, the form can be removed.  Just solder it into place on the circuit
  105. board.  It should hold quite nicely.  Also be sure to position Q1 so that the
  106. emitter, base, and collector are in the proper hols. The schematic should be
  107. pretty easy to follw.  Although it has an unusual number of grounds, it still
  108. works.

  126.     Ok, now go to the box, remove the red wire that was already on Screw 1,
  127. and attach it to wire "A" of the bug.  Then attach wire "B" to the screw
  128. itself.  You can adjust the frequency which it comes out on the FM channel
  129. by either smashing, or widening thec coils of L2. It takes a few minutes to
  130. get to work right, but it is also very versatile.  You can change the frequen-
  131. cy at will, and you can easily record off your radio.

  595. 1.  Introduction
  596.  
  597.      Worldwide controversy has
  598. been generated recently from
  599. several court decisions in the
  600. united states which have
  601. restricted popular magazines
  602. from printing articles which
  603. describe how to make an atomic
  604. bomb.  The reason usually given
  605. by the courts isthat national
  606. security would be compromised
  607. if such information were
  608. generally available.  But,
  609. since it is commonly known that
  610. all of the information is
  611. publicly available in most
  612. major metropolitan libraries,
  613. obviously the court's
  614. officially stated position is
  615. covering up a more important
  616. factor;  namely, that such
  617. atomic devices would prove too
  618. difficult for the average
  619. citizen to construct.  The
  620. United States courts cannot
  621. afford to insult the vast
  622. majorities by insinuating that
  623. they do not have the
  624. intelligence of a cabbage, and
  625. thus the "official" press
  626. releases claim national
  627. security as a blanket
  628. restriction.
  629.  
  630.      The rumors that have
  631. unfortunately occurred as a
  632. result of widespread
  633. misinformation can (and must)
  634. be cleared up now, for the
  635. construction project this month
  636. is the construction of a
  637. thermonuclear device,  which
  638. will hopefully clear up any
  639. misconceptions you might have
  640. about such a project.  We will
  641. see how easy it is to make a
  642. device of your very own in ten
  643. easy steps, to have and hold as
  644. you see fit,  without annoying
  645. interference from the
  646. government or the courts.
  647.  
  648.      The project will cost
  649. between $5,000 and $30,000
  650. dollars, depending on how
  651. fancy you want the final product
  652. to be.  Since last week's
  653. column,  "Let's make a
  654. time machine", was received so
  655. well in the new step-by-step
  656. format, this month's column
  657. will follow the same format.
  658.  
  659. 2.  Construction method
  660.  
  661. 1.  First, obtain about 50
  662. pounds (110 kg) of weapons
  663. grade plutonium at your local
  664. supplier (see note 1).  A
  665. nuclear power plant is not
  666. recommended, as large
  667. quantities of missing plutonium
  668. tends to make plant engineers
  669. unhappy.  We suggest that you
  670. contact your local terrorist
  671. organization, or perhaps the
  672. junior achievement in your
  673. neighborhood.
  674.  
  675. 2.   Please remember that
  676. plutonium, especially pure,
  677. refined plutonium, is somewhat
  678. dangarous.  Wash your hands
  679. with soap and warm water after
  680. handling the material,  and
  681. don't allow your children or
  682. pets to play in it or eat it.
  683. any left over plutonium dust is
  684. excellent as an insect
  685. repellant.  You may wish to
  686. keep the substance in a lead
  687. box if you can find one in your
  688. local junk yard, but an old
  689. coffee can will do nicely.
  690.  
  691. 3.  Fashion together a metal
  692. enclosure to house the device.
  693. Most common varieties of sheet
  694. metal can be bent to disguise
  695. this enclosure as, for example,
  696. a briefcase, a lunch pail, or a
  697. buick. Do not use tinfoil.
  698.  
  699. 4.   Arrange the plutonium into
  700. two hemispheral shapes,
  701. separated by about 4 cm.
  702. userubber cement to hold the
  703. plutonium dust together.
  704. gelignite is much better,
  705. bit messier to work with.  Your
  706. helpful hardware man will be
  707. happy to provide you with this
  708. item.
  709.  
  710. 6.  Pack the TNT around the
  711. hemisphere arrangement
  712. constructed in  step  4.  If
  713. you cannot find gelignite, feel
  714. free to use tnt packed in with
  715. playdo or any modeling clay.
  716. colored clay is acceptable, but
  717. there is no need to get fancy
  718. at this point.
  719.  
  720. 7.   Enclose the structure from
  721. step 6 into the enclosure made
  722. in step 3.  use a strong glue
  723. such as "crazy glue" to bind
  724. the hemisphere arrangement
  725. against the enclosure to
  726. prevent accidental detonation
  727. which might result from
  728. vibration or mishandling.
  729.  
  730. 8.   To detonate the device,
  731. obtain a radio controlled (rc)
  732. servo mechanism, as  found in
  733. RC model airplanes and cars.
  734. with a minimum of effort,  a
  735. remote plunger can be made that
  736. will strike a detonator cap to
  737. effect a small explosion.
  738. These detonator caps can be
  739. found in the electrical supply
  740. section of your local
  741. supermarket.  We recommend the
  742. "Blast-O-Mactic" brand because
  743. they are no deposit-no return.
  744.  
  745. 9.   Now hide the completed
  746. device from the neighbors and
  747. children.  The garage is not
  748. recommended because of high
  749. humidity and the extreme range
  750. of temperatures experienced
  751. there.  Nuclear devices have
  752. been known to spontaneously
  753. detonate in these unstable
  754. conditions.  The hall closet or
  755. under the kitchen sink will be
  756. perfectly suitable.
  757.  
  758. 10.   Now you are the proud
  759. owner of a working
  760. thermonuclear device!  it is a
  761. great ice-breaker at parties,
  762. and in a pinch, can be used for
  763. national defense.
  764.  
  765. 3.  Theory of Operation
  766.  
  767.      The device basically works
  768. when the detonated tnt
  769. compresses the plutonium  into a
  770. critical mass.  the critical
  771. mass then produces a nuclear
  772. chain reaction similar to the
  773. domino chain reaction
  774. (discussed in this column,
  775. "Dominos on the March" march,
  776. 1968).  the chain reaction then
  777. promptly produces a big
  778. thermonuclear  reaction.
  779. And there you have it, a 10
  780. megaton explosion!
